My Quilting Journey – “From Architecture to
Quilt Pattern Designer”

Helen Creasey is an award-winning quilt designer, recognised several times at The Festival of Quilts, Birmingham including Visitors Choice in 2023. Quilting for her started as a therapeutic hobby after becoming a mother in 2018, but rapidly evolved into a passion for inspiring and sharing her work with others through social media.   Helen’s work is graphic, modern and bold.  She uses vibrant colours, black and white as well as gradients to create interest and her body of work is both pictorial and pattern-based. She favours Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP), loving the complex look and detail possible and a natural adaptation of her architectural training.

Helen’s workshops are filled with “aha!” moments as she breaks down advanced techniques into manageable steps.

Booking Workshops

Booking Workshops with Oast Quilters

Oast Quilters is pleased to organise a variety of tutored workshops throughout the year. Hopefully there is something to please all tastes on the programme, but if your area of interest is not covered then please contact the programme secretary,Tansy Martin, email: oastprogramme@gmail.com who will endeavour to find a suitable speaker/tutor for the future.

The guest tutors for workshops are often nationally, if not internationally, known in textile/quilting circles and we are privileged to be able to learn from their expertise at a rate which is much less than other workshop charges.

Guest tutored workshops cost £30 for the day for members of Oast Quilters (non-members £45). Our ‘In-house’ workshops are tutored by our own talented members and cost £25 for the day for Oast Quilters members and £40 for non-members.

The workshops tutored by invited Speakers take place on the Sunday after the Oast meeting (sometimes if the subject is especially popular more than one workshop is organised with a second usually taking place on the Monday). The workshops tutored by an Oast member take place during in April and June on a Saturday.

Requirements lists will be sent to attendees by email.

We strongly recommend that all electrical equipment brought to workshops (sewing machines, irons, extension cables, etc) should be PAT tested annually.

Tea and coffee is available throughout the day of a workshop, but members should bring their own mug and a packed lunch.

All workshops run from 10am to 4pm but arrive by 9.30 to set up.

If you would like to know whether a particular workshop still has spaces available, please email the workshop organiser oastworkshops@gmail.com or enquire on the Oast Facebook page.

Non-members may attend workshops provided that the workshop is not over-subscribed. Please email the workshop organiser oastworkshops@gmail.com for more information.

Booking a place on a Workshop

Members may request a place on a workshop (first come, first served basis) at any time up to the Oast meeting before the workshop by completing a Oast Workshop Booking Form:

You can obtain a workshop booking form from the Members’ table at each Oast Quilters meeting, or by downloading the booking form here (click on the link):

oast workshop booking form 2026

Verbal booking is not accepted. The only way to book a workshop is by submitting a booking form, either electronic or paper.

Members may book individual workshops throughout the year or book all that they wish to attend in a single submission.

Booking electronically Members are asked to email the completed form as an attachment to oastworkshops@gmail.com

Once a place has been confirmed the requirements list will be emailed to the attendee.

Booking using paper forms: Paper copies are to be placed in an envelope in the ‘Workshops’ box at the meeting or posted to the Workshop Organiser.

Members who want to have the requirements list posted to them must also include a stamped self-addressed envelope (left unsealed) with the completed form. A separate stamped SAE must be provided for each workshop.

Paying for the Workshop

No deposits are required/accepted. Members wishing to attend a workshop must pay the full cost on booking, preferably by BACS.

Full details on how to pay for a workshop are contained in the Booking Form (See link under Booking a Place on a Workshop).

Confirmation of a place on a Workshop

A place on the workshop will be confirmed by email/telephone after receipt of payment by BACS is confirmed.

Members should contact the workshop organiser oastworkshops@gmail.com if they have not received a confirmation within two weeks of submitting their booking form and payment.

The list of confirmed attendees and people on the waiting list will be available at the Members’ table at Oast Meetings.

If a Workshop is over-subscribed

In the event that a workshop is over-subscribed, Oast will endeavour to arrange additional dates that members may be offered.

If that is not possible, then places will be allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

If a member is informed that they do not have a place, their name will be retained on the waiting list (in order of booking) in case there are any cancellations.

If a member is not successful in securing a place, then the fee will be refunded in full.

Cancelling a place on a Workshop

If you must cancel your place on a workshop, Oast will endeavour to ‘sell’ the place on your behalf. If there is a waiting list for the workshop, the place will be ‘sold’ to the next name on the list and your fee will be refunded.

If there is no one on the waiting list and you have a friend who would like to take the place, please let the Workshop Organiser know. It is vital that the change of name is notified to the Workshop Organiser.

If Oast is unable to sell the place, you will not have your workshop fee refunded. However, if there are exceptional reasons for your cancellation, please contact the Workshop Organiser who will liaise with the Committee regarding a refund of the fee.

Cancelled Workshops

If Oast has to cancel a workshop, full refunds will be issued.
